Many customers have asked us to help identify tips for detecting leaking pipes. Through our many years of working in the Metairie, Louisiana area, Harold’s has seen a multitude of drainage issues. Simple clogged toilets and dripping faucets are very common throughout many homes and offices. If you are in the Metairie area, and you are lucky enough to have these issues as your worst problems, you should count your blessings! Catching the large problems, versus just putting a band aid on the smaller issues, and solving them before they become out of control is the key to proper maintenance.
At Harold’s Plumbing, we are familiar with homes and businesses in the local New Orleans area and how to locate the actual causes and indicators of your damage. Leaking fixtures or pipes can be costly because everything in your home or office runs on a meter. Every gallon that you are wasting is money literally down the drain. Many times these problems are unnoticed until a very high water bill comes in the mail. A common problem we see every day would be a leaky flapper valve in a toilet. Toilets are a very common problem area in many Metairie homes and businesses due to the fact they are used so frequently.
To see if you have a pending toilet issue, simply open the back lid. If you have a leaky toilet in your home or office, you should be able to listen closely and hear a sound like air moving without flushing the toilet. If you hear a sound, more than likely you have a leak around the flap. Another way would be to tint the water in the tank with some food coloring and see if, without flushing, the water in your toilet bowl is colored. If you have determined there is a water leak in your commode, you can give our office a call at (504) 712-1558 and we can stop by to repair your toilet in no time.
After checking for problems with the toilets or faucets leaking, be sure to check other areas of your home or business such as irrigation systems, pools, or water heaters. If you verify that your fixtures are all in the off position, you can walk out to your meter to see if it is spinning. If the meter is spinning, it is also charging you. This is an indicator that water, somewhere, is running. Look around your yard, home, or business to see any signs of wet areas or standing water. There could be a problem with an exterior pipe that has cracked due to damage or even a freeze if it was not protected properly. If you are still uncertain if you have a leak; or, if you know you have a leak and are unable to locate it, call Harold’s Plumbing and we will work hard to locate any problem areas in your waste water system.
